FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TAX
Q: I noticed an order that didn't charge tax. What happened?
A: If you typically see tax being charged, and only notice it not being charged on one order, the most likely scenario is that the shipping address on that order is outside the zip code range designated in your tax policy. The majority of stores are configured with a tax policy designating all shippable, non-prescription products to be taxed when shipped in-state; orders shipped out-of-state are not taxed. If this is how your store is configured, then the first thing to check when you notice that tax wasn't charged is the shipping address.
If the shipping address does not explain the tax not being charged, the next thing to check is the "Is Taxable" setting of the specific item(s) being purchased. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the help article, How to Enable/Disable Tax on an Item, to check, and if needed, to change the item's "Is Taxable" setting.
And finally, if this also does not explain why tax wasn't charged on an order where you believe it should have been, the last thing to check is your Tax Rate configuration. Perhaps the zip code range is not sufficiently covering all areas or states that should be taxed. If so, follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the help article, How to Update Tax Rates on Your Store, to check, and if needed, to modify or add tax rate configurations to your store.
